A Look Back at Past ANP Art Stories & Exhibitions

In 2014, RVCA proudly announced its involvement with the Energy That Is All Around: Mission School art show. The show presented more than 125 works by five artists who launched their careers in San Francisco’s Mission District in the early 1990s. Featured artists included Barry McGee, Ruby Neri, Margaret Kilgallen, Chris Johanson & Alicia McCarthy.

RVCA created limited-edition t-shirts to commemorate the show. The 1st of which, by Alicia McCarthy benefited the Labor Day Program in San Francisco (sfdaylabor.org). A portion of the proceeds of the 2nd tee, designed by Chris Johanson, benefited New Avenues for Youth Organization in Portland, Or (newavenues.org). Both designs were available for a limited time online at RVCA.com and at RVCA retail stores in Los Angeles & San Francisco.

Full of duality, Mark Alsweiler’s acrylic paintings and wooden sculptures are both rudimentary and developed, blending raw painted areas with minuscule details. Being born on the mountainous South Island of New Zealand, the imagery from Mark's home country is very much evident in his often character-based work which explores man’s essential relationship with the natural world, alongside a celebration of human creativity. Mark's work has been shown in galleries throughout Australia and New Zealand including Monster Children, China Heights and Edwina Corlette Gallery.

On the 12th anniversary of its opening, we are proud to release a retrospective of 'Pressure', a collaborative cycling art project created in conjunction with renowned cycling company Cinelli. The 2008 exhibit featured an array of Cinelli bikes built and designed by such contemporary artists as Barry McGee, Ashley Macomber, Clare Rojas, C.R. Stecyk III, DMOTE, Josh Lazcano, KAWS, Madsaki, PM Tenore, Stephen Powers and more, the partnership was undertaken to pay tribute to both companies’ passion for design and excellence in their respective fields and attested to the undeniable link between underground art and track bike culture that had solidified in the years leading up to the exhibition. The show debuted at RVCA’s flagship store in San Francisco on Thursday, June 19th and was followed by a second September showing in Austin, Texas at cycling legend Lance Armstrong’s bike shop, Mellow Johnny's. To commemorate the show, an array of limited-edition merchandise was produced including RVCA T-shirts, a hardcover book, and, most notably, a special Barry McGee-designed Cinelli bike.

Melissa Grisancich | Spring-Time

'Spring-Time' is an annual women's group show curated by Australian ANP Artist Melissa Grisancich. Featuring a collection of works from nineteen female artists, creating the works they are the most deeply driven to make in their chosen medium. These works consisted of painting, ceramics, collage, sculpture, needlecraft and print with artists contributing from Victoria, New South Wales & South Australia, to Japan and Denmark. Grisancich's hope was to celebrate those who came before, and who will come after by bringing together a community of her own at the RVCA Corner Gallery.

Ed Templeton | 'Common Side Effects | 2015

ANP Artist Ed Templeton’s exhibition at the Huntington Beach Art Center was an expansive survey of the artist’s work from the last several years to present. The show featured some of his most iconic pictures, paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces spread throughout the space in Templeton’s dynamic installation style. Dominating the show were his “Teenage Kissers,” “The Seconds Pass,” “Wires Crossed” and “Huntington Beach” series, which is an ongoing look into his backyard’s beach culture and suburban sprawl.

Ricky Lee Gordon | 2016

Take a look into the artwork and inspiration of ANP Artist Ricky Lee Gordon as he brings meaning to the communities who live near his murals; representing ideas that everyone can identify with and be inspired by.

"I find that personal resonance allows for a true connection and true inspiration, therefore art has the power to manifest and effect with in another being, and that is truly beautiful. So in essence I guess, I am trying to create beauty in my work that allows for beauty in other people."

Art in the Streets | 2011

Several RVCA ANP artists contributed to the exhibition, which ran from APR 17, 2011 – AUG 8, 2011. Just prior to the show's closing, the RVCA staff was graciously given a private guided tour of Art In The Streets by then-director of MOCA, Jeffrey Deitch and ANP Quarterly Editor, Aaron Rose. With so many RVCA ANP contributors in the show, it was an amazing opportunity to see their work displayed on a stage of this scale.
